When it comes to loading websites, not all browsers are created equal. In a recent face-off, Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 trounced Firefox 4 and Google Chrome in a speed test. Unfortunately, though, IE9 is only compatible with Windows Vista and 7. XP users are better off with Chrome, which launches faster.

Upgrade to a 802.11n router.

We like the Cisco Linksys E1200 Wireless-N Router ($49.99), which is easy to set up, offers solid performance, and range, and even comes with parental controls. Just remember that your notebook must have an 802.11n card for you to experience the speed and longer range of 802.11n.

Buy a new wireless adapter.

While most newer notebooks come with 802.11n Wi-Fi cards, cheaper laptops and those that have been around for a few years will typically house an 802.11g card, which is slower. So try upgrading to a device such as the Cisco-Linksys WUSB600N Dual-Band Wireless-N USB Network Adapter ($49.95) to upgrade your laptop to wireless-N.

Add RAM.

Installing extra RAM, or memory, in your PC is an inexpensive, tried-and-true way of boosting its performance. Retailers such as Best Buy and NewEgg.com sell 2GB memory sticks for about $25, with 4GB kits costing about $50.

First, figure out how much memory your PC can handle. If you own a PC running Windows 2000 or XP, you can install up to 4GB. People who own notebooks running Windows Vista and Windows 7 should check the system information in the Control Panel to see if the operating system is a 32-bit or 64-bit one. 32-bit operating systems can accommodate up to 4GB of memory; 64-bit systems, up to 8GB. After you’ve purchased the RAM, you’ll need to open the back of your system to install. The exact location of the RAM can vary, so check your notebook manufacturer’s support site for directions.

Apple MacBooks can accept up to 2GB or 4GB depending on the model; MacBook Pros can handle up to 8GB. There are detailed instructions on how to do this to various models at support.apple.com.

Scrub your registry.

Install a registry cleaner such as Piriform CCleaner (free; www.piriform.com) to remove extraneous files clogging your system. In addition to old, unused registry entries, CCleaner will clear temporary system files, web form data, recent documents, cookies, your browsing history, and items in the Recycle Bin.

Try a tune-up suite.

For a more complete cleansing, tune-up software will clean your registry and use other tricks to breathe new life into your notebook. For PC owners, we recommend Iolo System Mechanic 10 ($49.95; www.iolo.com), which turns off unused background programs, identifies redundant and rarely used programs, and optimizes network settings.

Mac owners have their choice of tune-up apps, too, including the reasonably priced Cocktail ($14.95;www.maintain.se/cocktail). Remember that many PC security suites include some tune-up utilities. So before you spring for a dedicated tune-up program, see if your antivirus software can get the job done.

Defrag the hard drive.

Defragging, short for defragmenting, is a PC’s way of organizing its files more efficiently. Over years of use, pieces of a file might become scattered across different parts of a hard disk, forcing the computer to spend more time searching for them. To defrag your hard drive, go to the Start menu > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter. Mac users can use the built-in Disk Utility, located under the Utilities menu.

Install a solid state drive.

SSDs are flash-based drives that deliver much faster startup times and better overall performance than a traditional hard drive. And since they don’t contain any moving parts, they’re more durable, too. Luckily, prices have fallen sharply, making them better suited for do-it-yourself PC makeovers. Review of Samsung Infuse 4G

We've seen it powered down and had it dangled in front of us and now, four months after its launch, we've finally had a chance to play with a real, working Samsung Infuse 4G. This 4.5-inch superphone -- the biggest Sammy has made to date -- feels surprisingly light in the hands, despite its width. That's largely thanks to its crazy-thin 8.99mm profile, along with a subtly textured backside. The Super AMOLED Plus display -- the same kind found on the smaller Droid Charge -- which promises to be brighter than Super AMOLED as well as easier to view in direct sunlight, is simply stunning. We were seriously impressed by the punchy colors and deep blacks, although that outdoor test will have to wait for another day.

Blessedly, Samsung lets those vibrant colors speak for themselves -- it loaded the phone with Android 2.2 and ~~abstained from saddling it with its TouchWiz UI~~ made its TouchWiz UI less intrusive out of the box. The handset packs a single -- not dual -- core 1.2GHz processor, but you won't notice or care how many cores it has unless you're a benchmark junkie -- the phone launches applications briskly, while the touchscreen is responsive and always precise. We noticed nary a delay as we swiped among the seven home screens and three application pages. Speaking of speed, this is AT&T's first device to promise max speeds of 21 Mbps. Samsung held its press event in a New York City restaurant with poor reception, alas, and we have a feeling the crawling rates we observed off-camera don't do this phone justice. We're walking out of here with one of these bad boys, and we're stoked to fully put it through its paces over the next few days. GSC puts another foothold in Malacca with 10-scr GSC AEON Bandaraya Melaka Shopping Centre. Free shows May14-18

4 May – Complementing the existing 10-screen outlet at Dataran Pahlawan, Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) is to open a 10-screen cineplex in AEON Bandaraya Melaka Shopping Centre this 19 May, headlining "Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides".

The new cinema, situated on the second floor of what is believed to be the largest mall in the state, has a capacity of 1785 seats will be equipped with two digital halls to cater to the increasing demand for digital 3D movies.

Prior to its opening, the cinema will be screening free movies for five consecutive days (14-18 May 2011) as part of its test run.

Microsoft: Unofficially updated Windows Phones won’t get our software

Microsoft has confirmed that Windows Phone 7 handsets unofficially upgraded to NoDo (aka update 7390) using the ChevronWP7 tool will not be able to upgrade to the new 7392 version being pushed out now, at least by official means. According to the Windows Team Blog, the unofficial modifications leave the Windows Phone handsets looking to the Zune PC software as incompletely upgraded: because of that you get error code 80180048 and can’t go any further. Build 7392 isn’t expected to bring any especially interesting changes, but the issue could lead to headaches down the road when Microsoft releases more significant updates like Mango to the platform.

More worrying, Microsoft’s Brandon Watson says that, since the development team is focussing on getting Mango out on time, “undoing this specific problem was not in our schedule.” Instead, it’s a case of waiting for the ChevronWP7 team to release a fix which will get modified handsets back on the official Windows Phone path – something they are supposedly working on – or taking your phone back to the carrier or vendor and asking them to reflash it.

Ominously, Watson says that “because of this known error code, it is up to the mobile operators as to what they want to do with your phone” suggesting that some may be less willing to overlook hacks than others, and refuse to repair the device under warranty. Google Maps updated to 5.4.0

Google released Maps version 5.4.0 today, bringing about a small list of changes from the previous 5.3.1 update. Well, what's new in this version? Google gives us the abilities to:

Enabling search history for your account could certainly come in handy for someone who let's say, typed in an address on their phone, but wants to recall the address on another device at a later date. In other words, it basically centralizes your search history even more so you don't have to go looking all over the place for information you've already accessed.
The extra business details Google threw in for us include the star rating beneath the business name in the main map view, nice, and an aptly named "Details" section when you tap on the business for more info. On a restaurant, for example, this adds the type of cuisine, parking, and meals served along with the year opened and neighborhood.

What can we expect from future smartphones?

The smartphone has come a long way over the past 10 years. It has gone from a simple contact and calendar database to including a camera, video camera, GPS, and thousands of apps available with the touch of a button. Over the next year, NFC will be incorporated which will be the next major breakthrough.

What can we expect from smartphones over the next few years? Of course we are going to have better displays, faster processors, and more memory, but there will be more. Here are some of the things I am expecting to be implemented or continue to grow over the next few years:

Wireless HDMI: micro HDMI ports have been added over the last year and I think it is a great step, but it is inconvenient to have to carry around a wire. More importantly, wires are a thing of the past. We already have DLNA for pushing pictures and video to our TV’s without wires, but if you want to mirror your screen or play a game, you need the HDMI connection. Wireless HDMI is still evolving and is currently too expensive, but over the next few years, as costs come down, it will be a great addition to our phones.
